- “ The dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act with their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible ” This means that people that dream during the night will wake up and realise their dreams are just dreams and will not act on them but someone that dreams in the day will act on their dreams and this makes them dangerous because they take risks to achieve their dreams
- At the beginning of the book, Joe Simpson says he likes being in the mountains, this gives me the impression that he likes to be alone and independent, He also enjoys knowing there are no other climbers and knowing there will be no rescue helicopters
- The line “ He was an easy friend: dependable, sincere, ready to see life as a joke … a touch of madness that makes just a few people so special. ” This tells us that Simon and Joe may have been friends for a long time and they have a special bond, also that Simon is a reliable friend that would most likely do anything for his friends, and he would be friends with anyone. The quote “ There were few other people I could have kept up with for so long. ” Also backs up the fact that they have been friends for a long time. The quote “ Simon was keeping a steady pace that matched mine. ” Tells us they must have been climbing together for so long that they knew each other’s natural pace.
- “ Simon and I had found Richard resting in a sleazy hotel in Lima, halfway through his six-month exploration of South America. ” This tells us that they must not have known him very long but must have thought he would be a good person to have around. “ He had lived off grubs and berries with pygmies wile dug-out canoeing through the rain forests of Zaire. ” This says that Richard must be someone that lives very cheaply and often relies on the goodwill of others to get around. And also is fine with doing things that are a bit different.
- “ We were in the middle of the Cordillera Huayhuash, in the Peruvian Andes, separated from the nearest village by twenty-eight miles of rough walking. ” Says that if something happens there will be no help and this foreshadows that fact that something probably happens later on in the story.
- Joe talks to himself when he is in the mountains, this would help him because it gives him a reminder of what he is trying to achieve and to keep on going.
